E German stamp celebrates Berlin Wall - 20 Pfennig - DDR
25 Jahre Antifaschistischer Schutzwall - 20 Pfennig - DDR
This original GDR (East German) stamp was released in 1986 to mark the 25th anniversary of the building of the Berlin Wall, on 13 Feb 1961. Note the happy smiling woman pressing flowers onto the GDR border guards in her gratitude! The wording translates as "25 years [of the] Antifascist Protection Wall" - which was how the GDR authorities always referred to the Berlin Wall (in reality built to stop huge numbers of East Germans fleeing to the West), and just goes to show that spin was not invented by Alastair Campbell after all. I bought this stamp when I was teaching English in the GDR from 1985 to 1987, and have had it ever since.
