Back of First Day Cover reads:

By June of 1944, German defenses along the open beaches of France's crucial Channel coast — built primarily by slave labor — were formidable. Besides steel-reinforced concrete bunkers for gun emplacements, the entire shoreline from Cherbourg to Calais had been barricaded with half-a-million assorted anti-invasion obstacles, including more than four million explosive mines. Huge logs and steel beams had been driven into the sand and tipped with mines or metal teeth to cut through landing craft. Concrete antitank obstacles lined the beaches. Marshal Ervin Rommel called it the "zone of death," adding, "The war will be won or lost on the beaches." He was right. Unfortunately, for the Germans, it would be a devastating defeat from which they would not recover.
